Memorial Day Weekend Saw 4,000 Illegal Immigrants Cross Rio Grande Valley Sector Alone

Border patrol chief says there is no effort to secure the border.

QUICK FACTS:
  • The border crisis escalated over Memorial Day Weekend with more than 4,000 immigrants illegally crossing the border in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas alone, Fox News reports.
  • According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol has encountered 1,219,920 undocumented migrants so far in 2022, and it does not appear that the volume of illegal immigration is slowing down.
  • The eminent end to Title 42, which allowed the United States to turn away migrants seeking asylum under the potential danger of health concerns, is being eroded by the Biden administration despite attempts by the court to keep it in place.
  • The Justice Department is still attempting to end Title 42 and has filed an appeal with the judge who ruled that it stay in place.
  • Former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott called out the Biden administration over his lack of attention to what Scott described as a growing national security crisis.
PUSHBACK BY BORDER PATROL:
  • “There’s no effort to actually secure the border and to figure out who and what’s coming in when you create a chaotic situation like this, and they have created this through their policies,” Scott said in response to the growing illegal crossings.
  • Border patrol Chief Raul Ortiz announced on Friday that his agents were responsible for picking up 10 sex offenders, a large amount of deadly drugs, and other illegal immigrants who are wanted for serious crimes during the last three days.
BACKGROUND:
  • Recent numbers from the Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that the illegal population grew from 10.2 million when President Joe Biden took office to 11.6 million in April.
  • “This means that illegal immigrants accounted for some 1.35 million (about two-thirds) of the two million growth in the total foreign-born population since President Biden took office,” said the analysis from the Center for Immigration Studies.
