When questioned under oath, Mayorkas says he wasn’t of the now-viral videos before her nomination.
QUICK FACTS:
- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said under oath on Tuesday he was unaware of Disinformation Governance Board Executive Director Nina Jankowicz’s TikTok videos.
- During a hearing, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) asked about the videos, even quoting one of the lines saying they were “really quite precocious,” causing Mayorkas to say that he “was not aware of those videos.”
- Questions were raised among conservatives about why someone being appointed to such a high office wasn’t vetted thoroughly enough before a nomination for her social media to have been reviewed.
- According to Breitbart News, Mayorkas was also “not familiar” with statements Jankowicz made about first son Hunter Biden’s laptop.
JANKOWICZ’S SOCIAL MEDIA USE:
- In several of her TikTok videos, which were also posted to Twitter, the new Disinformation Governance Board Executive Director called herself the “Mary Poppins of disinformation.”
- In another video, she appeared to role play as some of the “trolls” who made negative statements to her on the internet in response to her publically posted content.
- Jankowicz has since made her TikTok account private after her reportedly satirical song about “information laundering” went viral.
BACKGROUND:
- The Biden Administration’s Disinformation Governance Board is frequently compared to the fictional “Ministry of Truth” from George Orwell’s book, 1984 on a dystopian future.
- Jankowicz was a loud supporter of the now-debunked Russia-collusion hoax, and has prompted concern among Republicans about whether the board will put a damper on free speech.
