Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, said “the criminal” was to blame for the recent murder of an American citizen.
After initially providing him with some protection by asserting that illegal immigrants are not statistically more prone to commit crimes than native-born Americans, CNN anchor Jim Acosta asked Mayorkas directly how he would answer to people who placed the responsibility on the administration.
“What do you say to critics who blame the administration for allowing something like this to happen?” Acosta asked. “Obviously this is something you hear in Right-wing media all the time.”
“Jim, first and foremost, of course our hearts break for the children, the family, the loved ones, the friends of the individual who was murdered — the woman — the mother,” Mayorkas replied. “Jim, a criminal is responsible for the criminal act. The criminal who committed this heinous act should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, and forcefully so. That is my response.”
Many critics pointed out that, at least in that specific segment, neither Acosta nor Mayorkas seemed willing to mention the victim, Rachel Morin, by name; Mayorkas, in particular, seemed unsure of how to refer to her, going back and forth on live television between calling her a “individual,” “woman,” and finally “mother.”
“Mayorkas calls her ‘the individual who was murdered,’” Stephen Miller mentioned in an online post. “This creep refuses to take any responsibility and can’t even be bothered remembering Rachel Morin’s name,” the New York Post’s Miranda Devine stated.
Others centered on his refusal to acknowledge the open borders enforced by the Biden administration and the ease with which criminals have been able to enter the country and commit crimes.
“They just don’t care. It’s that simple. The border will remain open, people will pour in unvetted, deportations and enforcement will remain nonexistent, and Americans will continue to die. They just don’t care,” New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino said online.
