U.S. Marine veteran Daniel Penny turned himself in for the murder of Jordan Neely, a mentally-ill homeless man who had allegedly been yelling threats before he was placed in a chokehold by Penny and two other individuals.
Neely was unable to be resuscitated.
Neely was also allegedly threatening passengers on New York City’s F Train prior to Penny’s intervention, according to a witness.
Penny’s attorneys stated their client acted to protect themselves, saying, “Daniel never intended to harm Mr. Neely and could not have foreseen his untimely death. We hope that out of this awful tragedy will come a new commitment by our elected officials to address the mental health crisis on our streets and subways.”
