Manchin Urges Biden to Pardon Trump After Hunter Controversy

Senator Joe Manchin called on President Joe Biden to issue a pardon for President-elect Donald Trump, citing the need for balance following Biden’s controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden. Speaking to CNN, the West Virginia independent suggested a blanket pardon for Trump to “clean the slate.”

Machin posed the question, “Why don’t you go ahead and pardon Donald Trump for all his charges and make it, you know, it would have gone down a lot more balanced, if you will.”

Biden’s pardon for Hunter covers potential offenses from January 2014 to December 2024 and followed claims of “selective and unfair” prosecution. Hunter Biden faced federal tax charges to which he pled guilty earlier this year and was also convicted for gun-related offenses. Trump has similarly asserted that the judicial system has been weaponized against him, leading to charges of mishandling classified documents, election interference, and falsifying business records.

Manchin argued that Biden’s decision complicates his legacy, calling the pardon divisive. His sentiments echo criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) labeled the move an “improper use of power,” while Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) warned it undermines trust in the justice system.

Critics also worry the decision will have political repercussions. Democratic Representative Glenn Ivey (D-MD) noted the pardon could weaken arguments against potential abuses in Trump’s administration. Arizona Representative Greg Stanton dismissed claims of political targeting, emphasizing Hunter’s felonies and jury conviction.

Manchin’s suggestion highlights growing divisions over the pardons and raises questions about how Biden’s actions will shape political dynamics heading into Trump’s presidency.
