New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued an emergency order banning mass public celebrations ahead of America’s 250th. Mamdani’s emergency order targets the permitting process for large-scale events.
“This year, New York City will be hosting events associated with the FIFA World Cup from June 11, 2026 through July 19, 2026, which overlaps with planned celebrations for the United States 250th anniversary from July 1, 2026 through July 9, 2026,” the rule explains. “The events associated with the FIFA World Cup and the United States 250th anniversary will require significant realignment and deployment of NYPD personnel, which will further divert resources from regular assignments or require the scheduling of NYPD overtime.”
“To more effectively deploy police resources and control overtime costs, the NYPD has recommended that the Department deny certain permit applications for new events between June 11, 2026 and July 19, 2026,” it adds.
Events that may face permit denials include those that occur between June 11 and July 19, events not held in 2025, events that are non-demonstrations, and events that risk public safety due to a lack of police resources.
Sources told the New York Post that the event has not yet received the necessary permits to hold the public event.
The president of the Times Square Alliance noted that while organizers are disappointed, they are still preparing for an “amazing summer.”
“Our hope is this will be an amazing summer in Times Square and in New York City with plenty to do,” the president said, as per Fox 5 New York. “While disappointed we will not have a public event for America250, all events are not created equal, and we will continue to try and work with the city to get approvals not only for legacy events but for new and exciting events that require minimal or no city resources or events that can be managed safely with private resources.”
While the event is still scheduled, it will be organized differently in accordance with the new policy.
“America250 and One Times Square will host a July 3 Times Square Ball Drop to ring in the Fourth of July. Much like New Year’s Eve, the celebration will be broadcast live, giving millions the chance to be part of the moment from wherever they are,” a spokesperson for America250 said. “A limited, ticketed in-person experience inside One Times Square will also be available, with details to come.”
