A majority of the 25 district attorneys linked to George Soros who were up for election this week faced defeats, indicating voter disapproval of progressive policies that critics argue have contributed to rising crime rates nationwide.
Many of these Soros-backed candidates ran in traditionally liberal districts but suffered significant losses, even as Vice President Kamala Harris received strong support in those same areas. According to the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund, a pro-police organization monitoring these races, this shift suggests that many Democratic voters are now rejecting what they see as overly lenient criminal justice policies.
Of the 25 Soros-supported district attorneys on the ballot, 12 were either defeated or recalled. Soros, a left-leaning billionaire originally from Hungary, supports progressive causes worldwide through various non-profits, including his Open Society Foundations. Since 1984, he has donated over $32 billion to these initiatives, according to the foundation’s website.
One of the most notable defeats occurred in Los Angeles, where Soros-backed District Attorney George Gascón lost by 24 percentage points to former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman, who campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform. Public safety was a major issue for voters, in contrast to Harris’s performance in Los Angeles County, where she led by 30 points.
Similarly, in San Francisco, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins won against prosecutor Ryan Khojasteh, who was supported by former DA Chesa Boudin, recalled in 2022. Jenkins noted that San Francisco has taken a “hard turn to the right” in recent years, a sentiment echoed by Gascón following his own loss.
In Alameda County, home to Oakland and Berkeley, Soros-backed DA Pamela Price was also recalled, following pushback against her perceived soft-on-crime approach. Despite Harris winning the county with a significant margin of 75% to 25%, voters showed strong support for stricter criminal justice policies.
“Across the battleground states and in Vice President Harris’ home state of California, a sizable share of Democrats voted to oust progressive prosecutors,” said Sean Kennedy, policy director of the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund, to Fox News Digital.
