About 75% of those arrested for crimes in Midtown Manhattan are illegal immigrants.
Police sources told the New York Post that illegal immigrants are likely to blame for assault, robbery, and domestic violence. In Queens, more than 60% of arrests are linked to noncitizens.
The New York Police Department is already at a disadvantage due to sanctuary city laws. Officers can neither track one’s immigration status nor can they work with ICE.
Veteran former prosecutor at the Queens District Attorney’s Office Jim Quinn told the Post that “New York City eliminated a tool to get rid of violent criminals. What a mess.” He called the sanctuary city law “pathetic” and “disgusting.”
“There are days we have so many migrant cases, we have to call in for extra Spanish interpreters,” a law enforcement officer at the Queens Criminal Courthouse told the outlet. Another court officer said in jest, “Come on Mondays! Almost every case is a migrant.”
The Post learned from another officer that many of those arrested are “professionals.”
“These aren’t their first crimes,” the source said, adding, “Crime would be down significantly if there was a wall and we could account for everyone who comes into the country. And more importantly, throw them out if they commit a crime.”
The statement comes as a Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Aragua, now operates in New York City and is linked to hundreds of crimes.
New York residents have fled the state due to its crime surge. In 2023, New York City lost 78,000 residents, The Epoch Times reported. In 2022, more than 126,000 residents left the city.
Since spring of 2022, an estimated 180,000 illegal immigrants have entered New York City.
