A Georgia lawmaker filed a resolution to rename a mountain after President Trump. Sawnee Mountain, located outside of Atlanta, is currently named after a Native American chief.
“President Trump is one of the most transformative presidents in our nation’s history,” Republican State Rep. David Clark wrote on social media. “That’s why today I introduced a resolution to rename Sawnee Mountain in Forsyth County to Trump Mountain to honor his historic legacy of Making America Great Again.”
The county criticized the proposal, stating, as per FOX 5 Atlanta, that it “remains committed to the historical importance of the Sawnee name in our community and as the official name for one of our county’s most impactful natural resources. Forsyth County leadership was not included in any discussions regarding this resolution from Rep. Clark and would have opposed the motion had it been presented. We stand firm in preserving the legacy of the Cherokee tribe with the Sawnee name for the mountain range.”
According to the New York Post, a plaque near Sawnee’s statue reads, “Sawnee was a very friendly and generous man, and out of appreciation for his help, settlers gave his name to the mountain on which you now stand. No evidence has been found that the Cherokees called it anything other than ‘the mountain.’”
Similarly, a West Virginia resolution seeks to establish the tallest point in the state, Spruce Knob, as “Trump Mountain” in honor of his accomplishments.”Trump Mountain.”
“The people of West Virginia, in overwhelming support, voted for Donald J. Trump in every county during the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections, reflecting a shared commitment to the values of freedom, economic prosperity, and patriotism,” the resolution says, noting that “President Trump’s dedication to the state and its citizens has had a profound and lasting impact, and his support for the coal industry, job creation, and infrastructure projects was crucial to the continued success of this great state.”
Spruce Knob symbolizes “strength, endurance, and resilience, qualities that epitomize the leadership and perseverance demonstrated by President Donald J. Trump during his time in office,” the resolution says.
