Lara Trump announced her resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) amid speculation she may run for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat. The position will be vacated by Marco Rubio, whom President-elect Donald Trump selected as his nominee for secretary of state.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Trump expressed interest in serving in the Senate, saying, “I would 100 percent consider it.” While noting that she has not made a final decision, she emphasized the importance of gathering all necessary information before committing to a campaign.
Trump was elected RNC co-chair in March alongside chair Michael Whatley. She cited the GOP’s strong showing in the recent elections as the fulfillment of her goals. “With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” Trump explained, adding that Whatley would continue as RNC chair.
Lara Trump’s potential Senate run has garnered significant attention. Last month, she told Fox News’ Sean Hannity she “would love to serve the people of Florida.” Supporters, including Maye Musk, the mother of Elon Musk, have praised the idea, calling for fresh voices in a traditionally male-dominated Senate.
At 42 years old, Trump’s candidacy would represent a generational shift in Florida’s political landscape. Known for her outspoken support of her father-in-law and strong ties to the Republican base, she could bring considerable momentum to the GOP’s efforts in the Sunshine State.
If Trump enters the race, her candidacy would set the stage for a dynamic contest in a key battleground state.
