Nearly 150 House Democrats have backed articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, first launched by Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL).
As of Monday evening, 146 out of 213 House Democrats backed the effort. According to the impeachment resolution, Noem has “willfully and systematically refused to comply” with several laws and has “breached the public trust.” Noem has further used her position for “personal gain while inappropriately using taxpayer dollars,” the resolution alleges.
Despite voting for a measure funding ICE, another Democrat, Rep. Laura Gillen (NY), has called for Noem to be removed. “Another U.S. citizen has been killed at the hands of ICE and there must be accountability, which is why Secretary Noem must be impeached immediately,” Gillen wrote on X amid the controversy surrounding the death of Alex Pretti. “Under her leadership, ICE has targeted U.S. citizens and children and killed Americans. She is not focused on safety or border security; she’s focused on chaos and self-promotion, undermining local law enforcement and stoking violence as a result.”
Meanwhile, President Trump met with Noem and told reporters that “she’s doing a very good job.”
“The border is totally secure. You know, you forget we had a border that I inherited where millions of people were coming through. Now we have a border where no one is coming through. They come into our country only legally,” he said. “As soon as you accomplish something, it goes into history and nobody ever wants to talk about it.”
When asked if Noem is going to step down, Trump asserted, “No.”
