Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has expressed his support for Donald Trumps 2024 presidential campaign.
In an interview with CBS, McCarthy said that be believes Trump with be the presidential nominee for the Republican Party.
“And if Biden stays as the nominee for the Democrats, I believe Donald Trump will win, I believe the Republicans will gain more seats in the House, and the Republicans will win the Senate,” he stated.
When asked if he would be open to serving in Trump’s cabinet, McCarthy said, “In the right position. Look, if I’m the best person for the job, yes. Look, I worked with President Trump on a lot of policies. We worked together to win the majority. But we also have a relationship where we’re very honest with one another.”
McCarthy recently announced his plans to step away from Congress by the end of the year.
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, McCarthy said, “I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started.”
Reflecting on his almost two decades in Congress, McCarthy added, “No matter the odds, or personal cost, we did the right thing. That may seem out of fashion in Washington these days, but delivering results for the American people is still celebrated across the country.”
“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” he stated. “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
