At least four people were killed and five others were wounded in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin.
According to the New York Post, the shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. The gunman is believed to be a juvenile who attended the school. The individual was found dead at the scene.
NBC reported that Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told reporters, “So close to Christmas. Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. These types of trauma don’t just go away. … My heart is heavy for my community. My heart is heavy for Madison.”
Barnes said the injuries from the shooting range from “minor to life-threatening.”
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) said in a statement, “I am closely monitoring the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) wrote on social media, “My sincere condolences and prayers for all the victims of the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School. I will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
The Madison Police Department said in a statement that the matter is an “active and ongoing investigation. More information will be released as it is available.” They urged people to “avoid the area.”
The school has about 400 students from kindergarten through high school.
