John Thune to Become Senate Majority Leader

Senator John Thune (SD) has won the vote to become the Majority Leader.

The vote was 29-24.

Thune said in a statement, “I am extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 199th Congress, and I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House. This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda, and our work starts today.”

Three candidates ran for the position: Thune, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), and Senator John Cornyn (TX).

On the first ballot, Thune received 23 votes, Cornyn received 15, and Scott received 13.

Conservatives have called out Thune’s criticism of President-elect Donald Trump.

“Senator John Thune has consistently shown that he does not support President Trump’s agenda, and his track record reflects that,” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) wrote. “The Senate deserves a majority leader who is committed to serving the will of the people, not the Uniparty. I believe that leader is @SenRickScott!”

Turning Point USA Founder Charlie Kirk said Thune “has a short window to show us he will support President Trump, fill his cabinet, confirm his judges, and pass his agenda.”

“If he does, we will support him,” he wrote. “If he doesn’t, we will work to remove him.”

According to End Wokeness, Thune’s voting record is only 62% conservative.
