Podcast host Joe Rogan expressed concern over mysterious drones buzzing the tristate area, after watching a video speculating they might be detecting harmful substances. Rogan, known for his skepticism on government explanations, reacted to a theory presented by John Ferguson, CEO of a remote aircraft systems company in Kansas.
Ferguson suggested the drones may be deployed to “smell” substances like gas leaks or radioactive material. In a TikTok video, he speculated that nighttime drone flights could be part of a non-nefarious mission to locate something specific on the ground. He admitted, however, that his theory was based solely on opinion and not verified by other experts. “If you think it’s nonsense, that’s fine,” Ferguson said, addressing concerns about misinformation.
Rogan, sharing the video on X, remarked, “This is the first video about these drones that has got me genuinely concerned.” He has previously questioned official statements, calling government responses “sus.”
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby dismissed concerns last week, saying the sightings largely involve manned aircraft misidentified as drones. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas echoed this view on Sunday, adding that loosened regulations permitting nighttime drone flights account for some sightings. He assured that any foreign involvement or criminal activity would be addressed.
Despite reassurances, many remain skeptical, including prominent lawmakers. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, and Andy Kim recently demanded answers from the FBI, DHS, and FAA. They requested more information and radar technology deployment to monitor and address these incursions.
The ongoing sightings have unnerved residents of New York and New Jersey, prompting debates over transparency and drone regulation. DHS has yet to respond to Rogan’s comments or Ferguson’s theory.
