Former first lady Jill Biden said in a newly released interview that she feared her husband was experiencing a stroke during his June 2024 presidential debate against Donald Trump, a statement that directly contradicts her public praise of his performance that same night.
In a clip from CBS News “Sunday Morning” released Wednesday, Jill Biden said watching the debate “scared me to death.”
“I was frightened,” she said. “Because I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since.”
“I don’t know what happened,” she continued. “As I watched it, I thought ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke.’ And it scared me to death.”
Hours after the June 27, 2024, debate, Jill Biden stood before supporters at a post-debate campaign rally and told the crowd her husband “did such a great job.”
Joe Biden’s performance that night, marked by halting speech, prolonged silences, and a vacant stare, prompted widespread alarm among Democratic allies and voters. Within days, a wave of congressional Democrats and major donors began calling on Biden to exit the race.
Biden resisted those calls for weeks. He suspended his campaign on July 21, 2024, less than a month after the debate.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris wrote in her 2025 memoir that Jill Biden had pressured Doug Emhoff to continue backing the then-president after the debate. Multiple Biden administration officials and campaign aides have since spoken publicly about how questions surrounding Biden’s cognitive health were managed inside the White House.
The CBS interview is scheduled to air in full this coming Sunday.
Jill Biden’s remarks represent the most direct acknowledgment from the former president’s family that his condition during the debate raised immediate medical concerns, even as his team publicly insisted he was fit for office and capable of completing a second term.
