Senator J.D. Vance, newly announced as former President Trump’s running mate, made a powerful appeal to evangelical conservatives at the Faith and Freedom Coalition breakfast in Milwaukee.
Speaking just hours after his vice presidential nomination, Vance reassured the audience that social conservatives would always have a voice in the Republican Party. He emphasized, “Social conservatives have a seat at this table, and always will so long as I have any influence in this party,” adding that President Trump shares this commitment.
Vance shared his personal faith journey, describing how he moved from inconsistent church attendance in his youth to atheism while attending Yale Law School, before ultimately finding his way back to Christianity. He credited his wife and fatherhood for rekindling his faith, leading to his baptism into the Catholic church in 2019.
The Ohio Senator spoke about integrating faith into governance and highlighted the importance of recognizing God’s presence in our lives. “There are a lot of little touches of God in our past, in our present, and in our future,” Vance stated, encouraging believers to be attentive to these divine interventions.
Notably, Vance referred to Trump’s survival of a recent assassination attempt as a miracle, further emphasizing the role of faith in current events.
While Vance is known more for his economic populism than his evangelical background, his address to the Faith and Freedom Coalition demonstrated his commitment to appealing to and representing Christian conservatives in the upcoming election.
