Italy Travel Advisory Raised Amid Terrorism Concerns

The U.S. State Department has elevated its Italy travel advisory to Level 2, urging Americans to “exercise increased caution” due to potential terrorist threats. This change, announced on May 23, 2025, reflects concerns over possible attacks in public spaces frequented by tourists.

The advisory warns that terrorists “may attack with little or no warning,” targeting areas such as tourist attractions, transportation hubs, markets, restaurants, hotels, religious sites, and large events. Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor local media, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time embassy alerts.

Italy, which welcomed 65 million international visitors in 2024, now joins other European countries like France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom under Level 2 advisories. These advisories recommend heightened awareness due to potential threats.

The State Department advises travelers to prepare for potential plan changes and establish emergency contingency plans. This includes staying alert in tourist spots, checking local media for updates, and enrolling in STEP to receive messages and alerts from the U.S. Embassy.
