The Israeli Air Force (IAF) carried out extensive airstrikes across Syria on Sunday, targeting key military installations and weapon stockpiles to counter threats to Israel’s security. These precision strikes, according to Israeli officials, were aimed at preventing the transfer of advanced weaponry to terrorist organizations and other hostile actors in the region.
Reports from The Times of Israel detail that the airstrikes struck multiple strategic sites, including ammunition and weapons depots at the Khalkhalah airbase in Suwayda, military positions in Daraa Governorate, and the Mezzeh airbase in Damascus.
Later in the day, the Mezzeh airbase—a critical hub of Syrian security operations—was targeted again, along with the Scientific Studies and Research Center, suspected of contributing to weapons development. Additional strikes hit a central square in Damascus, home to intelligence and customs offices.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been closely monitoring the movement of advanced weaponry within Syria, seeking to prevent these arms from falling into the hands of Hezbollah or other groups that could endanger Israeli citizens. Compounding the situation, the collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has allowed rebel forces, led by Abu Mohammed al-Jolani of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), to advance into Damascus with little resistance. Al-Jolani, a former Al-Qaeda commander, has positioned HTS as a dominant force among the fragmented Syrian opposition.
