In a sweeping military operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian weaponry and chemical facilities following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Over 24 hours, Israeli forces also entered strategic Syrian territories, including the demilitarized zone and Mount Hermon, to counter emerging threats.
The Assad regime collapsed Sunday as rebel forces, including Islamists, advanced on Damascus. With Russia and Iran declining to assist Assad, Israel acted swiftly to neutralize potential dangers. Israeli jets targeted heavy weaponry, air defense systems, long-range missiles, and suspected chemical weapons sites abandoned by Assad’s forces. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated these measures aim to prevent weapons from falling into extremist hands.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar emphasized that Israel’s actions were defensive, focused on protecting its citizens rather than intervening in Syria’s internal affairs. He highlighted Israel’s concern over extremist groups gaining control of advanced weaponry.
In parallel, Israel has voiced support for the Kurdish population, who face threats from both Syrian rebels and Turkish forces. Discussions with the U.S. are ongoing about providing assistance to the Kurds, who have previously fought against ISIS. Israel is also exploring ways to protect Druze and Christian minorities in Syria, vulnerable after the regime’s fall.
The situation has broader regional implications. Houthi rebels from Yemen targeted the Israeli city of Yavneh with a drone strike, causing property damage but no injuries. Separately, an accident involving seized Hezbollah weapons in southern Lebanon killed four Israeli reservists.
The IDF operation underscores Israel’s proactive stance in securing its borders and countering threats amid Syria’s instability. Strategic strikes and territorial security measures aim to prevent weapons proliferation and safeguard regional stability.
