Iran Implements Facial Recognition Technology in Universities

Students have expressed concerns that free thought is on the decline in Iranian universities after officials implemented facial recognition.

Some measures are believed to be invasive, as students are required to have their faces scanned to access meals.

Students must also have their faces scanned to obtain their student cards.

Although officials claim the facial scans are to protect against lost cards, the policy was implemented shortly after universities installed surveillance cameras.

The entrances of female dorms at the Isfahan University of Arts have also reportedly incorporated facial recognition, according to student union representatives.

Other students face restrictions, being denied physical entry to the school without word from a disciplinary committee, while some professors have also been suspended on unknown legal grounds.

Reporting from Biometric Update:

Administrators suspended Beheshti University Economics and Political Sciences professor Yadullah Dadgar after he was involved in a collective letter in which university professors voiced support for student protesters. At least 58 professors have been suspended since Ebrahim Raisi began his Presidency of Iran in August 2021.

Dr. Mohsen Borhani, who was one of the professors suspended from Tehran University, claims authorities started the removals of professors before the eruption of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests of 2022.
