Iowa Town Becomes 49th Sanctuary City for the Unborn

City Council votes unanimously to ban abortion within their city.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Willey, Iowa has become the 49th city nationwide and the first in its state to make itself a sanctuary city for the unborn, making it illegal to perform abortions within the city limits.
  • According to a report by Christianity Daily, the city’s leadership voted to approve the ordinance banning abortions on Monday in a unanimous 4-0 vote.
  • Sanctuary Cities For The Unborn Founder Mark Lee Dickson announced the victory of the protection of the unborn via his Facebook page, saying that the city has joined a number of Texas towns and others scattered around the country who have taken the pledge.
MORE ON THE CITY’S SANCTUARY STATUS:
  • Willey’s city ordinance declared that the city was a sanctuary for the unborn in all stages of pregnancy, making it illegal to end the pregnancy in any way, including via abortion-inducing drugs.
  • A penalty of $500 is imposed on those who violate the ordinance by conducting the abortion, assisting with it, or aiding in transporting a woman to an abortion provider.
  • “We’re not so much worried about brick-and-mortar abortion facilities as much as we are abortion pill-by-mail and turning the mailbox into an abortion facility,” Dickson said.
  • Mayor Kristin Nehring said of the ordinance, “I think that it is good for our community to speak out and do what they think is best and stand up for what is right, and I believe that is what the community did tonight.”
