Indiana Police Officer Placed on Leave Following Allegations of Child Neglect

The Logansport Police Department (LPD) has placed one of its officers on administrative leave following allegations of child neglect. The officer is reportedly implicated in a disturbing incident where a child in their care was forced to stand outside in freezing temperatures while holding a humiliating sign.

The sign allegedly read: “I want to stab and kill my brother, I even take an antipsychotic. If you need to give pity, then give it to the victims.” This shocking incident has drawn widespread concern and prompted an investigation.

LPD Chief Travis Yike addressed the situation in a statement, emphasizing the department’s commitment to accountability. “The public’s trust is of paramount importance to us, and we take any allegations of misconduct very seriously,” he said. “We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our department and will ensure a full and transparent process as we review the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Rebecca Gibbs, the first individual to report the incident, told FOX59 and CBS4 that she contacted the police department after witnessing the child outside in the cold. Gibbs, aware that the child’s guardian was an LPD officer, specifically requested a different officer to handle the situation. However, the implicated officer was the first to arrive on the scene.

“I told him right off the bat, ‘I do not want to speak with you,’” Gibbs recalled, expressing her frustration. She also claimed that the child’s other guardian was watching the situation unfold from a window. According to Gibbs, police initially dismissed her concerns, stating that no illegal activity was occurring and refusing to allow her to file a report.

During the incident, Gibbs noted that the child was inadequately dressed for the cold, wearing only Crocs, and appeared terrified. She attempted to offer a blanket and invited the child to warm up in her car, but the child declined, saying, “Please don’t, I don’t want to get in trouble.” Gibbs described the experience as “horrible,” adding, “I wouldn’t let my dog sit out for an hour, let alone my child.”

The case is now under investigation, and the officer involved remains on administrative leave.
