Illinois Family Demands Justice After Mexican Drug Cartel Killed 30-Year-Old Man

An Illinois family is demanding justice from Mexican authorities following the tragic death of Jesus Macias, a 30-year-old man killed near Villanueva, Zacatecas, on December 30.

According to relatives, Macias was traveling with his family after purchasing a stove for his mother when they encountered an improvised checkpoint allegedly operated by a drug cartel. The attackers reportedly shot out the tires of Macias’ vehicle, forcing it to stop, before opening fire. He was fatally shot and died in his grandmother’s arms.

Gisselle Jimenez, Macias’ niece, recounted the horrifying details, emphasizing the senseless nature of the violence. His obituary describes him as a hardworking and devoted family man, cherished for providing love and support to those around him.

“He was a father figure to me and many other girls,” said niece Lucero Rivas.

The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs had previously issued a travel advisory for Zacatecas in September, warning Americans against travel to the region due to high levels of violent crime, kidnapping, and gang activity.

On Sunday, Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham joined the family’s plea for justice. “Let’s come together. Let’s move on these villains who have taken the life of a simple man who just wanted to live in his country,” Cunningham said.

A funeral for Macias is scheduled to take place Wednesday in Rockford, Illinois, as the family continues to seek accountability for his death.
