More than 20 illegal immigrants attempted to board California school buses.
Fox 5 San Diego reported that two bus routes in the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District were interrupted by the migrants. The first incident occurred near the intersection of Highway 94 and Cochera Via, where three men were walking in the middle of the highway, attempting to stop one of the buses.
The other interruption occurred when a school bus encountered 20 migrants as it was picking up students. Parents helped the bus driver “ensure students were safe and that no one boarded the bus,” the outlet said.
Kimberly King with the Sheriff’s Department said that authorities are “conducting a follow up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred.”
“The Sheriff’s Office takes issues regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe,” King added.
Buses are to drive past stops where migrants are present.
One parent whose son was on one of the buses said her 8-year-old told her the migrants “had backpacks on Mom, and they were trying to get on our bus.”
The school district’s superintendent, Liz Bystedt, told families in an email, “Please stay [vigilant] and if the bus drives by, please follow the bus to pick up your child at the next stop.”
A Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said of the incidents: “The U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector is aware of two recent events involving migrant encounters near school bus stops along Highway 94 in East County San Diego. In both events, Border Patrol agents were notified and immediately responded. Several individuals were taken into custody without incident for being illegally present in the United States. All individuals taken into custody were transported to nearby processing centers for enrollment in removal proceedings.”
