House Republicans delivered two articles of impeachment to the Senate against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday afternoon.
Eleven House members walked from the lower chamber to the Senate.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) read the articles.
Some expect Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to table the articles of impeachment.
“The United States Senate cannot and should not turn a deaf ear to the democratically-elected members of the United States House of Representatives by dismissing their charges against Secretary Mayorkas without a full and fair trial,” Senator John Kennedy said (R-LA) said.
Last week, forty-three Republican Senators sent a letter to Schumer, demanding that he allow an impeachment trial against Mayorkas.
“Absent Secretary Mayorkas’ immediate resignation, this impeachment should remain faithful to Senatorial precedent,” the letter read. “The American people deserve to hear the evidence through a Senate trial in the Court of Impeachment.”
Only six Senate Republicans did not sign the letter: Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Rand Paul (R-KY), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL).
