House Passes Bill Avoiding Government Shutdown

The House of Representatives passed a bill to avoid a government shutdown.

The bill passed 336 to 95.

Two Democrats and 93 Republicans voted against the bill.

The bill’s passage is Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) first major move.

Johnson’s plan creates two separate deadlines for funding the government to create more defined goals.

According to Fox News, the bill would also prevent Congress from lumping the 12 bills into an omnibus package.

“Both [Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.] and I want to avoid a shutdown — so getting this done, obviously, before Friday midnight,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. “You know, the Senate has lots of arcane rules, but McConnell and I are going to work together — we talked about this yesterday — to get it done as quickly as possible.”
