House Oversight Committee Threatens Hunter Biden With Contempt of Congress

The GOP House Oversight Committee has threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress if he does not appear for his December 13 deposition.

In a letter to Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) wrote that the “subpoenas compel” Biden to appear before Congress.

“On November 8, 2023, we issued subpoenas to your client, Robert Hunter Biden, for a deposition on December 13, 2023. We received your letters dated November 28, 2023, and December 6, 2023, concerning the deposition subpoenas,” the letter reads. “Contrary to the assertions in your letter, there is no ‘choice’ for Mr. Biden to make; the subpoenas compel him to appear for a deposition on December 13. If Mr. Biden does not appear for his deposition on December 13, 2023, the Committees will initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.”

Lowell previously wrote to Comer that Biden would appear “at a public Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing.”

“Mr. Chairman, we take you up on your offer. Accordingly, our client will get right to it by agreeing to answer any pertinent and relevant question you or your colleagues might have, but—rather than subscribing to your cloaked, one-sided process—he will appear at a public Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing,” the letter said. “We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We therefore propose opening the door.”

Comer released a statement regarding Lowell’s letter, saying, “Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won’t stand with House Republicans,” he said.

“Our lawfully issued subpoena to Hunter Biden requires him to appear for a deposition on December 13. We expect full cooperation with our subpoena for a deposition but also agree that Hunter Biden should have the opportunity to testify in a public setting at a future date.”
