A newly sworn-in Texas Democrat places the House GOP majority at 218-214. House leadership can only lose one Republican for party-line votes. Three seats are vacant.
The three vacancies are the seats for New Jersey’s 11th District, Georgia’s 14th District, and California’s 1st District.
Despite the slim majority, the House passed the bill opening the government in a 217-214 vote, sending it to President Trump’s desk. The bill passed the Senate last week in a 71-29 vote.
House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that efforts to pause DHS funding will be futile under funding granted by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
“So they have enough funding to go for the next few years,” he said, as per CBS News. “So what they will be tying up, if the Democrats choose to close the government, is these very essential services for everything else – FEMA, Coast Guard, TSA and other aspects of national security.”
On Monday afternoon, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “I am working hard with Speaker Johnson to get the current funding deal, which passed in the Senate last week, through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into Law, IMMEDIATELY!”
“We need to get the Government open, and I hope all Republicans and Democrats will join me in supporting this Bill, and send it to my desk WITHOUT DELAY,” he wrote. “There can be NO CHANGES at this time. We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!”
