House Democrats Will Not Commit to Certifying Election Results if Trump Wins

House Democrats did not confirm whether they would certify the results of the 2024 Presidential Election if former President Donald Trump wins.

Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (MD) told Axios that if Trump wins a “free, fair and honest election, then we would obviously accept it.”

He noted that he “definitely” does not assume that Trump would win honestly.

Trump “is doing whatever he can to try to interfere with the process, whether we’re talking about manipulating electoral college counts in Nebraska or manipulating the vote count in Georgia or imposing other kinds of impediments,” Raskin claimed.

Earlier this year, Raskin suggested that Congress could invoke the 14th Amendment to prevent Trump from taking office, regardless of the election outcome or will of the people.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) told the outlet, “I don’t know what kind of shenanigans he is planning,” adding, “We would have to, in any election … make sure that all the rules have been followed.”

House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA) said Democrats would certify a Trump win “assuming everything goes the way we expect it to.”

“We have to see how it all happens,” McGovern said. “My expectation is that we would.”

A member of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ (NY) leadership team, Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI), told Axios, “I expect we would do as we did in 2016.”

“While disappointed with the outcome of the election and despite a handful of outliers making a ‘statement,’ we did not object then [nor] would we now object to the result of a democratic election,” Kildee noted.
