A historic Episcopal cathedral in New York City has displayed Pride lights.
The Cathedral St. John the Divine announced that “Iconic Pride” has returned for 2024.
The theme of this year’s event is called “Pathways of Pride.”
Events for the celebration include the “turning on of the iconic Pride Lights inside the Cathedral,” a book talk, a “Pride Family Picnic,” a Drag Story Hour, a Queer religion exhibition panel, and other activities.
The Queer exhibition is described a “collection of photographs by Frances Marshall that aim to force a conversation between two of the greatest paradoxes that exist today: Queerness and Religion.”
While some celebrated the cathedral’s lights, such as activist Justice Horn, who wrote, “The arches and columns are lit in all the colors of the rainbow—celebrating LGBTQ+ people everywhere,” many condemned the display.
One X user responded to Horn’s tweet, writing, “And Satan smiled.”
The Episcopal Church recently revealed a new logo, a “Pride shield,” designed to honor LGBT inclusion.
Graphic designer Melissa Walker said of the logo, “As a longtime ally of LGBTQ+ people, I was so excited to work on this Pride shield for The Episcopal Church. I hope many more people feel seen and included by this new graphic as we enter Pride month.”
