Hillary Clinton ruled out another run for the White House in 2024, saying a third bid is “out of the question.”
The former secretary of state and onetime first lady told the Financial Times in a highly sympathetic interview published Friday she expects President Joe Biden to run for re-election. But with his plunging approval numbers, some Democrats have hinted that the party needs a fresh face in two years. But it won’t be Clinton.
“No, out of the question,” she said. “First of all, I expect Biden to run. He certainly intends to run. It would be very disruptive to challenge that.”
Clinton lost the Democratic primary to former President Barack Obama in 2008, then lost to former President Donald Trump in the 2016 general election, although she has claimed that race was stolen from her. Biden has said he intends to run for re-election.
If Biden were to be re-elected and serve another four-year term, he would be 86 when he left the White House. Vice President Kamala Harris could step in if he decides not to run again. But her approval numbers are as dismal as Biden’s, and her own 2020 bid for the Democratic nomination gained no traction.
Clinton told the outlet she thinks Trump is poised to seek the Republican nomination in 2024 again, which would be his third White House run.
“I think if he can, he’s going to run again,” she said. “Follow the money with Trump — he’s raised about $130 million sitting in his bank account that he used to travel around, to fund organizing against elections … I don’t know who will challenge him in the Republican primary.”
Clinton told the outlet’s Edward Luce that the January 6 riots would never have happened if she had won four years earlier and said her loss to Trump haunts her. Luce told Clinton he had promised his young daughter Trump would not win, only to have her learn he’d been wrong.
“It’s really remarkable how often I’m told stories like that and how often I’m reading something like a work of fiction set in modern times[,] and 2016 is a traumatic event — it’s almost eschatological,” Clinton said. “It is a break in history. It’s such a piece of unfinished business.”
Although Clinton blames voter suppression and Russian interference for her loss to Trump, Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia collusion hoax has indicated it began as a political dirty trick hatched by the Clinton campaign and approved by Hillary Clinton herself.
