Hurricane, a distinguished Belgian Malinois and former Special Operations canine with the U.S. Secret Service, has died at the age of 16. Renowned for his bravery, the heroic secret service dog notably thwarted a White House intruder in 2014, earning him the title of the most decorated dog in American history.
In October 2014, during President Barack Obama’s tenure, an intruder scaled the White House fence and advanced toward the residence. Hurricane intercepted the individual, enduring punches and kicks, yet successfully subdued the intruder until security personnel arrived. This courageous act safeguarded the First Family and solidified Hurricane’s legacy.
Throughout his service, Hurricane received numerous accolades, including the Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Award for Valor and the U.S. Secret Service Award for Merit. In 2019, he was honored with the PDSA Order of Merit in the United Kingdom, and in 2022, he became the inaugural recipient of the Animals in War & Peace Distinguished Service Medal on Capitol Hill.
After retiring in 2016 due to injuries from the 2014 incident, Hurricane lived with his handler, Officer Marshall Mirarchi. Together, they founded K-9 Hurricane’s Heroes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to covering medical expenses for retired working dogs. Since its inception in 2020, the charity has supported over 150 retired military and government canines.
Hurricane passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. His unwavering dedication and service have left an indelible mark on the nation, and his legacy continues through the ongoing efforts of K-9 Hurricane’s Heroes.
