Harvey Weinstein Claims He Had Consensual Affair with Future California First Lady

Jennifer Siebel asked Weinstein for advice regarding her future husband, Gavin Newsom.

QUICK FACTS:
  • A lawyer for Harvey Weinstein plans to argue that his client had a consensual relationship with Jennifer Siebel Newsom before she was married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
  • Weinstein’s defense will reportedly use an email sent by Siebel Newsom to Weinstein in 2007 asking for advice about an affair Gavin Newsom had with an aide while serving as the mayor of San Francisco.
  • The email came before the Newsoms were married, and two years after Weinstein is accused of assaulting the actress in a hotel room.
  • Siebel Newsom eventually married Gavin Newsom about a year later in 2008 while he was still the San Francisco mayor.
  • Weinstein’s representation asserts Siebel Newsom wouldn’t have come to Weinstein about a sex scandal if she had been assaulted by the producer.
THE LEGAL TEAM’S FIGHT TO INCLUDE THE EMAIL:
  • Weinstein’s legal team fought to include the email from Siebel Newsom in which she asked the media mogul for advice about how to deal with members of the news.
  • Weinstein’s attorney argued it was important to include the details, and a judge eventually agreed with the producer’s attorney.
  • “Of all things you’d think a woman that is raped by Harvey Weinstein wouldn’t do, it’s [ask him] how to deal with a sex scandal,” defense lawyer Mark Werksman told the court. “The fact that she comes to Mr. Weinstein for that advice indicates the friendship and companionship of Jane Doe 4 and Mr. Weinstein.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Siebel Newsom is one of the five women Weinstein has been accused of raping and sexually assaulting.
  • According to reports, this particular incident took place in a Beverly Hills hotel between 2004 and 2005 and the rumors indicate that Weinstein’s side will assert that the union was voluntary.
