Vice President Kamala Harris claimed over the weekend that voting for her in the upcoming presidential election was “helping” God’s expectations.
“In just nine days, we have the power to decide the fate of our nation for generations to come,” Harris said while speaking in Pennsylvania. “And on this day, then on this beautiful Sunday morning, I am reminded God expects us to help Him.”
During the speech at the Church of Christian Compassion in West Philadelphia, Harris referenced the story of Paul when she was interrupted by shouting.
“Like Paul, we must remember that divine power works through our actions, and we have the power to move past division, fear and chaos,” she continued. “It is in and within our power to fulfill the promise of America and the promise to create opportunity for every child to protect our basic freedoms, the power to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God power the Black Church understood and has used for generations.”
“Here in Pennsylvania right now, each of us has an opportunity to make a difference, because in this moment, we do face a real question: what kind of country do we want to live in? What kind of country do we want for our children and our grandchildren?” Harris said. “A country of chaos fear and hate, or a country of freedom, justice and compassion. And the great thing about living in a democracy is We the People have the choice to answer that question.”
Harris claimed that the church was “made for such a time as this” to elect her.
“So let us answer not just with our words, but with our works. Yes, with our prayers, but also with our pressing. Yes, with our faith and also our faith, but also our feet. As we walk to the polls,” Harris said. “And yes, in these nine days, these next nine days will test us. They will demand everything we’ve got. But when I think about the days ahead and the God we serve, yeah, I am confident that His power will work through us. Because, church, I know we were born for a time such as this.”
Earlier this week, Harris suggested during an interview with NBC News that she would reject religious exemptions for abortions.
Hallie Jackson asked Harris if she would consider religious exemptions for abortions to appeal to a Republican-controlled Congress, to which the vice president said, “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”
“To Republicans like, for example, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, who would back something like this on a Democratic agenda, if, in fact, Republicans control Congress, would you offer them an olive branch, or is that off the table, is that not an option for you?” Jackson asked.
“I’m not going to engage in hypotheticals because we could go with a variety of scenarios. Let’s just start with the fundamental fact,” Harris stated. “A basic freedom has been taken from the women of America: the freedom to make decisions about their own body. And that cannot be negotiable, which is that we need to put back in the protections of Roe v. Wade, and that is it.”
As Jackson pressed for a discussion on the matter, Harris said, “I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole with you right now.”
