Hamas Caves to Talks After Israel Unleashes ‘Gideon’s Chariots’

Hamas has agreed to resume hostage negotiations following Israel’s launch of a major military offensive in Gaza. The renewed talks, held in Qatar, come after Israel intensified its campaign to dismantle the terrorist group and secure the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attacks.

On May 17, 2025, Israel initiated “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” a comprehensive military operation targeting Hamas infrastructure across the Gaza Strip. The offensive includes coordinated airstrikes and ground maneuvers aimed at crippling Hamas’s operational capabilities. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation’s intensity is designed to increase pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages.

In response to the offensive, Hamas returned to the negotiating table, with discussions facilitated by mediators from Qatar and the United States. The talks reportedly involve proposals for a temporary ceasefire and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed negotiators to remain in Qatar to pursue a resolution.

The renewed negotiations follow the recent release of Edan Alexander, the last known living American hostage, who was freed by Hamas on May 12, 2025. His release was seen as a goodwill gesture and has been linked to the resumption of talks.

Despite the ongoing discussions, Israel continues its military operations, emphasizing that the campaign will persist until all hostages are released and Hamas’s military infrastructure is dismantled. The situation remains fluid, with international mediators working to facilitate a comprehensive agreement.
