Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, condemned the United States for its plan to send Second Lady Usha Vance National Security Adviser Mike Waltz to the territory.
Egede told local news outlet Sermitsiaq: “We are now at a level where it can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician’s wife, which is a prospect. Because what is the security advisor doing in Greenland?”
“The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us, and the signal is not to be misunderstood. [Waltz] is Trump’s confidential and closest advisor, and his presence in Greenland alone will certainly make the Americans believe in Trump’s mission, and the pressure will increase after the visit,” he said.
Danish Prime Minister Meete Frederikson called the upcoming visit “unacceptable.”
“I have to say that it is unacceptable pressure being placed on Greenland and Denmark in this situation. And it is pressure that we will resist,” Frederikson said.
According to a press release announcing the Second Lady’s travel, Vance will visit Greenland on Thursday with her son to see “historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimusseru, Greenland’s national dogsled race.”
President Donald Trump said the visit to Greenland is “friendliness, not provocation.”
We’re dealing with a lot of people from Greenland that would like to see something happen with respect to their being properly protected and properly taken care of. They’re calling us. We’re not calling them. And we were invited over there, and I thought it would be great,” Trump said.
