Man Falls from Cross in Shocking Good Friday Mishap

An 84-year-old man was critically injured after falling nearly ten feet from a cross during a Good Friday crucifixion reenactment in Weston, West Virginia. The incident occurred at the Masonic Cemetery along Route 33 during the 20th annual celebration organized by Vandalia Community Christian Church.

The man, who was not a member of the church but was helping with the event, fell while participating in the dramatic depiction of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. As part of the long-standing tradition, three men in white clothing stand on platforms affixed to crosses to portray the biblical scene.

Following the fall, emergency responders airlifted the man to a nearby trauma facility. He suffered multiple broken ribs and was listed in critical condition over the weekend. By Monday, his condition had reportedly improved, and doctors no longer considered his injuries life-threatening.

A family member noted that the man remains in intensive care but is recovering steadily. The exact cause of the fall has not been determined. Church members and community participants expressed concern and prayerful support for the man and his family.

The incident casts a shadow over what was meant to be a reverent and moving commemoration of Christ’s sacrifice. While the tradition has continued for two decades without prior incident, this year’s accident raises questions about safety measures in such reenactments, especially for elderly participants.

No updates have been provided by authorities or church officials regarding future changes to the event or additional safety protocols. The reenactment is a central part of the church’s Good Friday observance and draws attention from the local community each year.
