A 66-year-old Savannah man, George “Dirk” Hardison, was violently attacked in his home after answering the door to two men posing as Amazon delivery workers.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. Saturday when Hardison opened the door to men dressed in Amazon’s signature blue and black jackets, carrying a package. The suspects forced their way into his home, demanding money before savagely beating him with what police described as a sledgehammer. The brutal assault lasted nearly eight minutes.
Neighbors, drawn by Hardison’s desperate cries for help, found him bloodied and suffering from multiple head injuries. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received 14 staples in his head. The suspects fled the scene with only $80 in cash, leaving Hardison’s community shaken.
Police describe the suspects as two younger Black males in their 20s with medium brown complexions. Surveillance footage shows them wearing masks, dressed in Amazon gear, and carrying the same package both before and after the attack. It remains unclear what was inside the box.
Authorities are actively searching for the men, who face charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and home invasion.
Amazon confirmed the attackers were not affiliated with the company, stating:
“These individuals were not making a scheduled delivery for Amazon. Delivery personnel do not typically knock on doors or require signatures unless prearranged. We work to monitor and remove unauthorized Amazon apparel from circulation.”
Hardison, a beloved employee of O’Connell’s Pub, is recovering from the ordeal. The pub has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support him, calling the attack “heinous” and urging the community to rally behind him.
Police continue their investigation, urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
