George Washington University Suspends Jewish Voice for Peace Over Antisemitic Actions

George Washington University has suspended its chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) through spring 2026 after violations tied to antisemitic conduct. The chapter hosted an unauthorized event on Adolf Hitler’s birthday and published a social media post accused of targeting Jewish identity, leading to extended disciplinary action.

The university’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities cited the group for holding an unapproved event on April 20 and for a social media post that created a “hostile environment” based on a protected characteristic—Jewish identity. The group was suspended through spring 2026 and placed on probation through spring 2027. The university required the removal of the post and adoption of stricter social media standards for reinstatement.

The JVP chapter had already been on probation from a previous suspension. In spring 2024, the group led a multi-day unauthorized encampment and was suspended until December 2024. It returned on probation until May 2025, before committing the new violations that prompted the latest disciplinary action.

Following the university’s decision, a JVP representative told the student newspaper, The GW Hatchet, that the group plans to disaffiliate from the university, citing the sanctions and a lack of confidence in the appeals process. The university’s records also note GWU has a significant Jewish population, including approximately 3,000 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students.

Jewish Voice for Peace is a far-left organization that has frequently drawn criticism for its anti-Israel rhetoric and participation in anti-Zionist protests. The decision by George Washington University to enforce these measures reflects growing national pressure on universities to address campus antisemitism and uphold policies that protect all students.
