Gaetz Joins House ‘Weaponization of the Federal Government’ Panel

Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, has joined the House Judiciary subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government, replacing Rep. Chip Roy of Texas.

The change was documented in the Congressional Record last week.

All Republican members of the panel were appointed by Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California.

“In order to devote adequate time to the Rules, Judiciary and Budget Committees, as well as be a dad and do my job as the Representative of Texas’ 21st Congressional District, I was happy to give my spot on the Weaponization Subcommittee to my friend, Matt Gaetz,” said Roy in a statement.

Gaetz’s spokesman stated that the Florida representative “is honored to serve on the Weaponization Subcommittee and will be working very hard.”

The subcommittee was established in response to calls from House Republicans to create a “Church-style” select committee to investigate allegations of government abuse, a reference to a 1975 Senate select committee led by former Sen. Frank Church of Idaho.

Both Roy and Gaetz opposed McCarthy for Speaker, but Roy had other priorities that took precedence, ultimately backing the California lawmaker.

Gaetz, unlike Roy, never voted for McCarthy for Speaker and instead voted “present” during the final votes.

The weaponization subcommittee, which is chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, will hold its first hearing on Wednesday to discuss the politicization of the FBI and DOJ and attacks on American civil liberties.

The hearing will consist of two panels.
