Former Rep. Joins California Gubernatorial Race

Former Democratic Representative Katie Porter announced a gubernatorial run in California.

“What California needs now is a little bit of hope and a whole lot of grit,” Porter said. “Fresh blood and new ideas, and leaders with the backbone to fight for what’s right. That’s why I’m running for governor.”

“In Congress, I held the Trump administration’s feet to the fire when they hurt Americans. As governor, I won’t ever back down when Trump hurts Californians — whether it’s holding up disaster relief, attacking our rights or our communities, or screwing over working families to benefit himself and his cronies,” she added. “We don’t have to choose between defending our values and tackling our challenges.”

Sources familiar with Porter’s campaign told the San Franciso Chronicle that she would likely drop out of the race if former Vice President Kamala Harris launched a gubernatorial campaign. Harris is expected to announce whether she will run for governor of California by the end of summer.

Similar comments were made by Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney, who told ABC News that should Harris run, “there are very few politicians who would want to take her on.”

“She’d be likely to win the Democratic nomination and Democrats are likely to win the governorship,” Pitney said.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has also announced a run for California governor, saying, “This is not going to be about party politics, this is going to be about fixing a broken state to make this the state that everyone in the country wants to come to. I’m tired of my friends leaving the state. I’m tired of watching my friend’s kids leave the state. We need to bring them all back with sanity and the promise that California is, and once again will be, the best state in this country.”
