Former Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra announced that he is running for governor of California.
“I am running to be governor of our great state of California,” he said in a video announcement. “And that’s because I watched my parents, a construction worker and a clerical worker, achieve the American dream. Can we do that today with this affordability crisis?”
“Very tough,” Becerra said. “But we’ve taken on these tough fights.” He added that California has “become the economic engine of this country” after succeeding in these “tough fights.”
“Right now, what can’t wait is that California dream,” he declared. “Real change comes with our participation. I’m looking forward to seeing you because together, we will rebuild the California dream.”
Becerra’s campaign website states that as Attorney General of California, he “led the charge to hold the first Trump administration accountable. He launched the landmark California v. Texas case, where he defended the Affordable Care Act (ACA) all the way to the Supreme Court and won.” The site notes that Becerra “took the Trump administration to court over 120 times, winning high-profile cases protecting reproductive rights, millions in COPS funding, and DACA.”
Former Democratic U.S. House member Katie Porter has also launched a campaign for California governor. In her campaign announcement, Porter emphasized her record of challenging the Trump administration, stating, “In Congress, I held the Trump administration’s feet to the fire when they hurt Americans. As governor, I won’t ever back down when Trump hurts Californians.”
Reports suggest that former Vice President Kamala Harris is also considering a run for governor of California.
