Florida high school students in a Miami-Dade College dual-enrollment course were handed a questionnaire asking them to reflect on their heterosexual identity and consider becoming gay. The assignment included questions such as “What do you think caused your heterosexuality?” and “Is it possible that being straight is just a phase?” Students were also asked if society could survive if “everyone were straight” given concerns over overpopulation.
The course, “Preparing for Student Success,” is designed to prepare high schoolers for college life. Parents say they were shocked to learn the material was included, with one mother saying she would have contacted law enforcement if her child had been approached with those questions. The questionnaire also probed students on who they had told about their sexuality and why they might feel compelled to display their heterosexual identity.
The misstep stemmed from textbook content titled POWER: Strategies for Success in College and Life by Robert Feldman, published by McGraw Hill—whose materials are used in thousands of K–12 districts. After The Daily Wire brought attention to the questionnaire, Miami-Dade College reviewed the content and subsequently removed the assignment
