Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation this week allowing residents to shoot and kill threatening black bears on their property.
Despite opposition from environmental groups, DeSantis signed into law HB 87, a bill that allows Floridians to shoot and kill a bear in self-defense.
The bill also states that anyone who does so must report it to Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission within 24 hours and they cannot keep or sell the carcass.
FWC reported that 6,000 out of 14,000 animal nuisance calls in 2022 were bear-related.
