Fetterman Suggests Support if Trump Picks DeSantis For Secretary of Defense

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) expressed uncertainty Wednesday about supporting President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense but indicated he might back the nomination if Florida Governor Ron DeSantis were chosen instead.

Speaking to reporters, Fetterman highlighted concerns surrounding Hegseth’s past, including allegations of sexual assault—claims Hegseth denies and for which he was never charged—and reports of misconduct during his leadership of veterans’ nonprofits. “I think my concerns with him are the same concerns that my colleagues on the Republican side have for him as well,” Fetterman stated.

Trump announced Hegseth’s nomination earlier this month, but reports suggest he is considering DeSantis for the role following criticism of Hegseth’s suitability. Fetterman acknowledged this shift, noting, “I understand now that Trump’s considering DeSantis,” and added that it would influence his decision.

Fetterman also emphasized the importance of rigorous vetting for the position. “If you’re going to be put in front of the most lethal organization in human history, I really think they need an FBI background check,” he said, referencing the Pentagon’s critical role. “It’s reasonable to have a full background [check] and consider that responsibility.”

The Defense Secretary nomination is expected to face intense scrutiny as the Trump administration seeks to solidify its national security team ahead of the new term.
