Fencing Raised Around U.S. Capitol Building Ahead of State of the Union Address as Trucker Convoy Heads to D.C.

Law enforcement was seen putting up high fencing around the capitol building following an announcement on Feb. 27 about the barriers from officials, calling it a security measure in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots.

OFFICIALS’ STATEMENTS:
  • “Out of an abundance of caution, and in conjunction with the United States Secret Service, a plan has been approved to put up the inner-perimeter fence around the Capitol building for the State of the Union Address,” USCP Chief Tom Manger said. “I have also requested support from outside law enforcement agencies as well as the National Guard to assist with our security precautions.”
  • Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), who previously introduced a bill to ban permanent fencing around the Capitol complex that while she understands security concerns, “However, I will ensure that the fencing comes down as soon as possible to restore freedom of movement for District of Columbia residents and the general public.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Fencing went up around the capitol building in July of last year and was put up again in September when rallies were held in regard to hearings about the Jan.6 capitol riots, according to Reuters
  • Additionally, there was a fencing perimeter around the White House that was taken down in April of 2021, according to CNN.
