Two months after The Quaker Oats Company voluntarily recalled its Pearl Milling Company pancake and waffle mix, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially classified the recall as Class 1—the highest risk level.
The FDA first announced the recall on January 15, citing the presence of an undisclosed milk allergen flagged by a retail partner. Individuals with a milk allergy could experience serious or even life-threatening reactions if they consume the affected product. At this time, no allergic reactions have been reported.
The recall affects two-pound boxes of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix distributed in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, and Wisconsin. The impacted products have a UPC code of 30000 65040 and a best-by date of 9/13/25. Consumers are advised not to consume the product if they have a dairy allergy.
On February 13, the FDA classified the recall as Class 1, meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that consuming the product could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death.” The agency explained that its classification process takes time, but it alerts the public about recalls as soon as possible.
A deadly FDA recall refers to a Class 1 recall, which is the most serious type of recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This classification means that using or consuming the recalled product poses a reasonable probability of causing serious health consequences or death.
If a recall is classified as Class 1, consumers should immediately stop using the product and follow the FDA’s instructions, which may include returning or disposing of the item. The recall may also include public warnings, product seizures, or manufacturer shutdowns to prevent further harm.
