FBI Issues Directive on LGBT Acronym Use

FBI whistleblower Kyle Seraphin shared an email sent to all FBI employees that directs them to use “LGBTQIA+” instead of “LGBT+.”

The email, leaked on X, reads, “The FBI has officially adopted the LGBTQIA+ acronym in place of LGBT+. This change was proposed by Bureau Equality, one of our nine Diversity Advisory Committees, and approved by FBI executive management to help promote a more welcoming workplace for members of our LGBTQIA+ community.”

“LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic, plus. The ‘+’ represents other gender, sexual, and romantic identities not covered by the letters of the acronym. More than 30 federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, use a form of the expanded acronym,” the email continues.”

The directive is “effective immediately” and will be used for “all internal events, observances, and communications; all U.S. intelligence Community products; and all external communications (social media posts, public reports, public announcements, etc.).”

The guidance comes as “diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility” is an “FBI Core Value.”

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is also a factor in the FBI’s recruitment process.

An October Instagram post from FBI Jobs said, “The FBI understands that the workforce is changing as vibrant and motivated younger generations start looking for career opportunities. That is why we firmly believe in implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion across all departments at the FBI, and it starts with providing developmental opportunities for our interns.”

Other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense (DOD), could spend nearly $270 million in taxpayer dollars to further the diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEI) agenda from fiscal years 2022 to 2024.

The department’s Strategic Management Plan for fiscal years 2022 to 2026 listed one of its goals as “inculcate DEIA principles across all DOD efforts.”

If the agency’s request for DEIA funding is included in the final legislation, the department will have spent $269.2 million on diversity initiatives across fiscal years 2022, 2023, and 2024.

“DEIA has impacts on both the Department’s workforce and its mission, and therefore it should be examined beyond the traditional human resources lens by which it historically has been viewed,” the strategic management plan reads.

The department also plans to “institutionalize the advancement of DEIA and the value of diversity to the Department’s mission.”
