NIAID Director and Covid-19 celebrity Anthony Fauci said he likely would not continue to serve as White House Chief Medical Advisor if Donald Trump were to be reelected in 2024.
Hesitant to go in depth with his reply, Fauci responded negatively when asked the question live on air Sunday by CNN’s Jim Acosta.
“If Trump were to return to the White House as President, and COVID was still a threat or there was some other public health emergency, would you have confidence in his ability to deal with a pandemic of this nature? Would you want to stay on at your post?” Acosta asked.
“Well, no to the second question,” Fauci replied, laughing nervously.
“The first question, if you look at the history of what the response was during the administration, I think at best you could say it wasn’t optimal,” he continued.
“And I think just history will speak for itself. I don’t need to make any further comment about that, it’s not productive.”
Fauci’s response is unsurprising, as he famously did not get along with the 45th president.
During the last year of his administration, Trump was forced to work closely with Fauci amid the coronavirus outbreak, disagreeing with him on numerous Covid-19 response measures, including school closure recommendations.
Toward the end of his tenure, Trump had begun rejecting “idiot” Fauci’s misleading recommendations and took to ridiculing him on social media.
